Kasargod, Mar 17: Mohammed Azharuddin alias Mohammed Azhar (29), son of Sheikh Mohammed from Hidayatnagar Uppala, was murdered with a sharp weapon in broad daylight in Uppala town near here at around 3.15 pm on Wednesday March 16.

Azhar was, at the time, sitting in a mobile shop located in the main road in Uppala town, on returning from a court hearing in Kasargod. The road on which the shop is located has dense traffic with customers from the town and nearby villages frequenting the shops located there for buying things they want.

A person holding a sharp weapon, all of a sudden, entered the said shop, and stabbed Azhar in the chest. Azhar, in an effort to save himself, started to run, but stumbled. The attacker then hit him to his face and neck regions. As a result, Azhar, who had by then reached a neighbouring cloth shop, collapsed in a pool of blood.

It is learnt that Azhar, a noted rowdy of the region, had been jailed for an offence earlier. After coming out, he had become lonely, and thought to have functioned as a police informer. It is suspected that those who were in his gang earlier murdered him because of the information he passed on to the policemen. Azhar used to get death threats over phone, and murder attempts had been made twice in the past on him. A knife was recovered from the spot of murder. His body was shifted to the mortuary of Mangalpady primary health centre.  Manjeshwar police have been investigating.
