Udupi: Educationist, Philanthropist, B Shivaram Shetty, Breathes His Last

Udupi, Mar 16: B Shivaram Shetty (87), who belonged to the famous ‘Gali’ lineage located in Brahmavar, passed away at his residence on Tuesday March 15. He is survived by two sons including Dr Vishwanath Shetty, well-known surgeon of Vinaya Hospital Kundapur, and a daughter.

Shetty, who began his professional career as a teacher, set up Sri Vani Vidyabhivriddhi Sangha after retirement, and set up higher primary schools in backward villages like Kadur, Mundadi, Matpady and Halnadu. He also started high schools in Nadur and Matpady, and encouraged rural children to undergo education. For helping children from financially backward communities, he built a students hostel for backward communities in Nadoor. Hundreds of teachers working in the educational institutions set up by him got employment opportunities because of him.

Shivaram Shetty was also well-known as an agriculturist, practitioner of native medicines, amateur Yakshagana artiste, etc. He had an in-depth knowledge about Ramayan and Mahabharat. He had worked as the secretary of Undivided D K District Aided Educational Institutions Conveners Association, and vice president of Udupi District Aided Educational Institutions Conveners. He was the director of Mandarti Agricultural Service Cooperative Bank and member of the governing council of Barkur Rukmini Shedti Memorial First Grade College. He was also the trustee of Nadur Brahmalingeshwara Chikkamma Parivara Devasthana.
