Mangaluru, Jun 20:The AJ Blood centre celebrated the World blood donor day on June 18.
The function was held after three years due to the Covid Pandemic. Dr Kishore Kumar, district health officer (DK) was the chief guest at the function. Dr Aravind P gave an informative talk on the “Simplified Answers to common Questions in transfusion medicine” in which he dispelled all myths regarding blood donation services.
AJ Blood centre also inaugurated the Voluntary blood donor ID card which will help all donors to keep information regarding their Blood group in their pocket, which might be required for emergency situations. This initiative is a first of its kind in this part of the world. Dr Kishore Kumar congratulated AJ blood Centre on helping the community, even with challenges faced regarding recruitment of donors, ethical and moral issues.
Dr Prashanth Marla, medical director, A J hospital and Research Centre informed the gathering regarding the modernization of blood transfusion services and the need for safe blood transfusion . NABH Blood bank has accredited AJ Blood centre about 5 years back and is the first and only blood centre in Mangaluru and the sixth in Karnataka for having this distinction.
Single donor platelets by Apheresis technology is available at AJ blood Centre which uses the continuous flow technology for separating platelets, which is unique and only available at this blood centre. AJ blood centre is the only blood centre which provides Leucodepleted blood products and irradiated blood products which are essential part of bone narrow transplantation services and other organ transplantation procedures. The Sterile connecting device at the AJ blood centre provides microbial contamination free blood products for safe transfusion practices.
