Indian Wells (California), March 12 (DPA) Portugal has been given fair warning as Roger Federer makes a return to Davis Cup play after missing nearly the last two years, riding to the rescue to try and keep Switzerland within a step of returning to the World group.
The world number two made the announcement on his website prior to his start at the Indian Wells Masters. "I have decided I am going to play the Davis Cup tie in July at home against Portugal. I am really looking forward to helping Switzerland begin the process of getting back into the World Group."
The 16-time Grand Slam winner last competed for his country in September, 2009, in a 3-2 win over Italy. Federer stands 37-11 in Davis play. The tie with Portugal will take place on the weekend after the Wimbledon final.
The winner of the tie books a return to the elite World group next season.
