Kadaba, Jun 11: It seems that the toilets that are built under the Swachh Bharat idea are done only for name sake and not maintained once they are inaugurated. The public toilet that was built in order to provide facility for tourists at Gundya under Shiradi gram panchayat limits is locked within months of inauguration due to unbearable foul smell.
Near Gundya junction on NH 75, seven toilets and four bathrooms were built in order to provide toilet and wash facility to tourists going to and coming from Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya. Inauguration of the same was done in December 2021.
The maintenance of the toilet was handed over to Janaseva Foundation of Hassan. Though this toilet facility does not lack any water supply, the toilet pit that is built is small in size. For the same reason the water used in the toilet overflows from the pit and gives foul odour all around.
Public is cursing the Shiradi gram panchayat for not maintaining the toilet that is so vital for passengers going to several places as Gundya is a junction place. They have urged the panchayat to take immediate action and rectify the issue.
Responding to the outcry of the public, Vineeta, president of Shiradi gram panchayat said, “The toilet is locked as some issue is noticed in the pit of the toilet. I do not have more information. I will speak to the PDO and do the needful.”
