Bangalore, Feb 22 (PTI): Karnataka High Court today directed the government and Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to submit within four weeks a compliance report on the action taken on proper implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) in educational institutions.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice A S Bopanna gave the direction on a PIL filed by Cancer Patients Aid Association seeking proper implementation of the Act in schools and colleges.
The petitioner submitted that schools and colleges, who under the Act are supposed to put up signboards stating there should be no sale of cigarettes and tobacco and also direct the vendors not to sell such products, were not implementing it at all.
The court then adjourned the PIL to March 29 for further hearing.
