Bangalore, Feb 21: Chief conservator of forests and head of the Lokayukta investigating team related to illegal mining, Dr U V Singh, who happens to be the chief executive officer of the Lake Development Authority of Karnataka, was assaulted by a gang of miscreants on Sunday February 20 afternoon. The assault occurred when Singh was on a visit to Nagawara tank to verify the information that untreated sewage was being released to the said tank. It may be recalled that Singh was also involved with the seizure of illegally stored iron ore at Belekeri port.
There is strong suspicion that a corporator of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike was behind this incident.
The members of a gang involved with releasing of toxic water into the tank, assaulted Singh. A complaint in this connection was filed in Amritahalli police station.
Singh had visited Nagawara Tank to check the veracity of the complaint received by him. He found that some unknown people were releasing toxic, untreated, sewage water with chemical content, into the said tank. Singh and other officials nabbed the people and took the tanker in question, into their custody. They also collected samples of the water in the tank.
Angered by this act, one of the gang members made a call, after which a gang of persons who came to the site in cars, started arguing with Singh. They tried to make good their escape along with the tanker, but the officials blocked them. They then pushed Singh around, assaulted him, and then ran away, the policemen said.
A case against the gang for obstructing a government official in discharging his duties and threatening him, has been registered.
