Karkala, Feb 9: Vidyakumar Bunnu (68), resident of Peruvaje Road in the town, breathed his last on Monday February 7, after a brief illness. Bunnu, who was the president of Karkala south block Congress committee, was also an acclaimed Jain leader. He is survived by wife and three daughters.
Bunnu, who was a native of Naravi village, had worked as a health assistant and village accountant for several years, before being promoted as food inspector, in which post, he retired. For ten years, he worked as the president of Karkala Taluk Government Employees Association, president of Dakshina Kannada District Village Accountants Association, and also as the president of the state committee of village accountants.
Vidyakumar Bunnu was also the president of Jina Chaityalaya Development Committee of Naravi, joint secretary of Karkala Jain Dharma Jeernoddhara Sangha, director of zone 8 of Jain Milan, and joint secretary of Karkala Sri Bhujabali Brahmacharya Ashram. He also functioned as the president of the managing committee of Yerlapady Hekkadka Anantamati aided higher primary school, and as the treasurer of Miyyar Lavakusha Jodukare Kambala Committee.
Bunnu also had worked in various other capacities like the member of Land Tribunal, member of Naravai gram panchayat, special officer on behalf of the government at Karkala Sri Bahubali Swamy Mahamastakabhisheka, among others. His sincerity and pleasing manners had made him immensely popular in the region and elsewhere.
Union minister, Veerappa Moily, former union minister, Oscar Fernandes, apart from various legislators and other dignitaries, have mourned the death of Bunnu.
