Mangalore, Feb 4: An inter-collegiate Yogasana competition organized by the Mangalore University was held at the School of Social work, Roshni Nilaya here on Thursday February 3. The competition was conducted for both men and women and various contestants from various colleges in and around the city actively participated.
The programme commenced with a formal inaugural function. The chief guests and judges were Yogaratna Delampady, a yoga exponent, RadhaKrishna Shetty, the director, founder and managing trustee of Prakrithi Yoga Kuteera, Chandra Raj, physical director of Sharada Vidyalaya, Kodialbail and Prajna Amruth, Naturopathy consultant of Mangala Hospital and Kidney Foundation.
Dr Jacinta D’Souza, principal of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya presided over the function. Akshaya Raj of 1st year BA compered of the entire programme. The function began with prayer song after which Flossy Rayappan, physical instructor of SSW welcomed the gathering. The dignitaries lighted the lamp which was followed by the presidential address by Dr Jacinta D’Souza. Delampady and Radhakrishna spoke on Yoga and importance of it in day to day life. The students of Roshni Nilaya demonstrated few asanas.
The competition included various items like jalanidhi, sutranidhi and so on followed by demonstration of Yogasana held at individual and group level. The individual prizes for men were bagged by Dhananjaya, Sanketh Kumar, Prasad Kumar of SDM Ujire securing 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
The first prize in individual women was shared by Shruthi Shetty and Della Cordeiro and second place shared by Manasa Shetty and Pavithra Nayak of Roshni Nilaya. The overall championship for men was bagged by SDM Ujire and second place by St Aloysius Evening College.
Dr Nagalingappa, physical director of Mangalore University addressed the gathering in the valedictory session. Prizes were awarded to the winners by all the dignitaries present. Shruthi Shetty, the sports secretary proposed the vote of thanks.
