Karwar, Feb 4: The inaugural ceremony of the BSc Nursing Course was held at the auditorium of St Ignatius Institute of Health Sciences, Honavar, here on Wednesday February 2.
It is a unit of Dharma Jyothi Charitable Society, Vamanjoor, Mangalore which is managed by the Missionary sisters of Queen of the Apostles Congregation.
Fr Dr Derek Fernandes, Bishop of Karwar, Luizinho Faleiro, former Chief Minister, Govt of Goa and CWC member, New Delhi, Dolphy Prashanth D’Souza, Bantwal, member, Labour Welfare Fund, ministry of labour and emlpoyment, Msgr Simon Tellis, vicar general, Diocese of Karwar, Sr Maria Goretti, superior general, SRA Congregation, Dinakar Shetty, MLA, Kumta-Honavar Constituency, Monte Fernandes, AICC member, Kumta, , Fr Dr Lancy Rodrigues, Infant Jesus Church, Honavar, George Fernandes, chairman, Milagres Credit Co-operative Society, Karwar, Sr Zeena D’Souza, province animator, Karnataka – Goa province and Sr Santosh D’Souza, former province animator were the dignitaries for the day.
The traditional lamp was lit by the dignitaries. The illuminated board was inaugurated by Luizinho Faleiro and Dr Derek Fernandes blessed the course. Balloons were let off by the BSc Nursing Students.
Speaking on the occasion, Luizinho Faleiro said, “India dwells in the villages said Mahatma Gandhi. Development has to be done in the villages especially in the sectors of health and education. At a time when all the super power European countries and America are facing a huge financial crisis, India’s economic situation is stable which makes us all proud”, he expressed.
“Health is an aspect which needs to be given prime importance especially in the rural sectors and this is the responsibility of all in the society. Nursing is a noble profession and job oriented”, he added.
He lauded the sisters of the SRA congregation on their wonderful service of reaching out to the rural areas providing health, education, shelter to the destitute and orphans.
He praised Sr Maria Goretti for her foresight and vision and wished the nursing college to expand its horizons to the medical college too. He also wished all success to the people gathered saying that the people of Goa and Coastal Karnataka spoke the same language.
Dolphy Prashanth D’Souza lauded the work of SRA sisters and their earnest interest towards the upliftment of weak and poor sections of the society. He also appreciated the quality of education that they are already imparting and wished them that soon they may begin a Medical college under their patronage.
Dinakar Shetty, MLA said he was proud to have an institution rendering its services in the fields of social and medical and promised to render all his help while beginning the medical college.
The report of the institute was presented by Sr Zarina Lobo, administrator on the occasion. Dr Derek Fernandes said that serving the sick and downtrodden was equal to serving God. He urged the student nurses to be compassionate while serving the sick and follow the ethics of nursing.
Sr Maria Goretti, felicitated Dolphy Prashanth D’Souza, member, Labour Welfare Fund, Ministry of Labour and Emlpoyment, who was the instrumental to get the permission for the B Sc nursing from the Government of India, Monte Fernandes, Roy Castelino, Civil Contractor and engineer, Ronald Rosario, consulting Engineer of SRA Congregation, Sr Santosh D’Souza, former province animator and Sr Zeena D’Souza, province animator for their contribution towards the institute.
Speaking on the occasion she thanked each and every one who worked for the upliftment of the institute.
Sr Santosh D’Souza, welcomed the gathering and Sr Zeena D’Souza delivered the vote of thanks. Later the students presented a short cultural programme.
