Puttur, Feb 4: The development work of the state highway stretch between Puttur and Sullia has come to a standstill abruptly. As a result, people are facing lot of problems. It is learnt that the contractor concerned has stopped work, as he is not getting support and cooperation from the forest department, gram panchayats and Mescom, and that this has made it impossible to continue with the road works.
The widening work had gained full momentum, and works had been started at a time at several places like Kallarpe, Kumbra, Kaudichchar etc. A big pit dug for the purpose at Santyar school had to be closed because of protest by locals. The locals were angry that the children going to school and anganwadi centre were facing problems because of the pit. Shifting of electric poles and water pipes, felling of trees, and such other works have not been undertaken, without which, road works cannot progress, sources revealed.
Now, dust is rising from the spots where digging was undertaken, making it difficult for school children near the roadsides, vehicle drivers, and the pedestrians to use the road. The people having been seeking for the visit of the state PWD minister, C M Udasi, to the stretch and realize their problems. Udasi will be visiting Puttur on Saturday to participate in inaugural function of court complex.
