Mangalore: WIT to Host National Open Karate Championship

Mangalore, Jan 21: ‘Western National Open Karate Championship – 2011’ will be organized under the aegis of the city-based Western Institute of Technology (WIT) between February 4 and 6, 2011. The venue of the championship will be Padmavati Kalamandir in Moodbidri.

This was informed by Florence Mendes, principal of the institute, at a press conference held here on Thursday January 20.

“This is the first Karate competition to be organized in Karnataka as per World Karate Federation rules and regulations. About 2,500 Karatekas from 20 states are expected to take part in the event.  Apart from 30 neutral umpires from All India Karate Federation, over 30 referees will officiate the championship, which be held in six courts. International level facilities will be provided at the championship. The participants will get free training from international trainers. The participants will be eligible for scholarship of 25% on courses offered by WIT. The programme will be telecast live,” she explained.

All the participants will get participation certificates. On this occasion, Western Karate School International will be inaugurated, she added.

President of Western Karate School International, Walter Stephen Mendes, Western National Open Karate Championship main referee, Sandeep Salvi, technical director of the school, A K Raja, and chief trainer, Victor D’Souza, were present at the press conference.
