Puttur, Jan 21: Reportedly, a couple from Kanchana in Bajattur village near Uppinangady, committed suicide on Thursday January 20, because of the debt burden. They have been identified as Poovappa Gowda (60), and Padmavati (55). Both of them consumed poisonous substance laced with honey, in their farm, it is learnt.
Poovappa is said to have raised a total loan of Rs 20 lac to build a new house. He was finding it hard to repay the loans, and the lenders were pressurizing the couple to repay the loan. Shivarama Gowda, son of Poovappa Gowda, in a statement filed with Uppinangady police station, expressed suspicion that his parents would have chosen to end their lives, unable to bear the pressure exerted by lenders.
