Bantwal, Mar 3: In an incident reported from the taluk, a person illegally entered the central masjid at Mithabail near B C Road Kaikamba on the night of March 1. He also is said to have posed a death threat to the priest of the mosque. Based on information passed on by the locals, the personnel of the town police station here have arrested the accused.
The arrested man happens to be Babu Poojary (60) from Kalladka. At about 10 pm on Tuesday, he parked his two-wheeler near the mosque, moved around suspiciously and then went into the mosque. The priest of the mosque stopped him and questioned the purpose of his visit. The priest claimed that Poojary said that he was there to murder the priest and that no one can stop him.
A knife was found in his two-wheeler during the detailed check. The town police station personnel who arrived there, arrested Babu Poojary and produced him in the court. He was remanded to judicial custody. In the meantime, as a precautionary measure, police protection was extended to the said mosque.
CCTV cameras have recorded the man entering the mosque. However, it is not clear why he went in. The police are investigating the incident.
Bantwal municipal president, Muhammed Shariff, has urged the police to conduct a detailed probe into the background of the man who entered the mosque with an ulterior aim and to rid the community of an air of apprehension that this incident has given rise to. Bantwal unit of SDPI has asked the people not to get incited by politically charged instigations, to extend total support for the police investigation and to maintain peace and harmony in the society.
