Udupi, Jan 3: Lakshmish Upadhya (23), son of Ramamurthy Upadhya, a resident of Adarsh Nagar in Moodu Alevoor near here, lost his life at Kemtoor village, after accidentally being pierced in his chest by the sharp end of a wicket.
Upadhya was one of the youth, who had come together to play cricket at Kemtoor ground as usual, on Sunday January 2. Upadhya, who had already played earlier, was in the field as a runner for an injured batsman. While taking a run, he accidentally stepped on the only wicket that had been planted at the bowler’s end, and fell on it. The sharp end of the wicket pierced his chest in the bargain.
Although Upadhya initially said he had not suffered major injury, he lost his life due to heart attack while being taken to a hospital. Those who were with him at the time, said that neither was Lakshmish seriously injured, nor was there too much blood on his chest.
Lakshmish’s family is poor, and his father ekes out a living by working as a cook for caterers. The family, which looked forward to a bright future and pinned their hopes on Lakshmish, who was pursuing M Com course, is shocked at the death of the only son in the family. He is survived by parents and a sister.
