Mangaluru, Feb 17: A day after SDPI slammed the Congress for not making its stand clear on the Hijab issue, president of district Congress minority wing Sahul Hameed on Thursday February 17 alleged that the SDPI has been covertly supporting the BJP and providing it 'fodder'.
Addressing a press meet here, Hameed said, "We never thought that the row over Hijab which started in a college would become an international issue. Congress strived to settle the matter within the four walls during the initial stages of the Hijab incident.
"In the last one year, SDPI has been supporting the BJP. When you look at some of the incidents that have occured in the district, you will see that SDPI was behind them. Several innocents were arrested in the recent Uppinangady incident but SDPI leaders never returned, they even forgot that they had given a deadline over the Uppinangady issue. SDPI is providing fodder to the BJP at the right time," he alleged.
"Congress has always been in favour of Hijab. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Siddaramaiah, and D K Shivkumar have clarified their stand over Hijab. SDPI should clarify their stand on Hijab before questioning the Congress," he said.
Speaking on the origin of the Hijab issue in Udupi college, "The college management's working president is the notorius criminal Yashpal Suvarna. Instead of resolving the matter in the college, he let it blow out of proportion. There should be a probe so that the truth will be revealed.
"BJP has disappointed people in the state and the country. People have lost faith in BJP. People are chasing away BJP leaders when they arrive for campaign," he said.
On rural development minister Eshwarappa's statement on saffron flag hoisting, he said, "He has insulted the national flag. He never speaks about PFI or SDPI. We all know about Eshwarappa's toungue, it is similar to a stinking toilet."
He further said, "If BJP thinks that it will gain any advantage with the Hijab issue, then it is an illusion. BJP will end up in hell."
Congress leaders Ibrahim Kodijal, K Mohammed, Ismail, Fayaz and others were present.
