No proposal to rename existing Mangaluru airport received from Karnataka government: Centre

New Delhi, Feb 7: V K Singh, minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation has said that no proposal to rename the existing Mangaluru International Airport has yet been received from the state government of Karnataka.

The question was posed by MP Dr Subramanian Swamy in the Rajya Sabha on Monday February 7. He had asked whether it is a fact that there is a great demand to rename the existing Mangaluru Airport, whether it is also a fact that many suggestions have been received on the new names, and what action the government has taken to rename the airport.

Minister V K Singh said that the proposals for naming/renaming of airports are considered based on the recommendations of the concerned state government accompanied by a resolution passed in the state Legislative Assembly. “No such proposal to rename the existing Mangaluru Airport has yet been received from the state government of Karnataka. The decision on renaming of airports is taken by the Union Cabinet after due consultations with the concerned central ministries and departments,” he said.

It may be recalled, many politicians and Tulu activists have been demanding on renaming the airport after Koti Chennayya or other exemplary personalities who have brought laurels to Tulunadu.

    Shri Kotichennayya International airport is the name deserved for this airport becuase this twins sacrificed their life for Tulunadu , fought against social injustice , promoted agriculture and protected our Tulunadu culture.

    Mangalore airport is there because of ex MP Sri Ullal Srinivasa Mallya sir...Who is responsible for so much projects in erst while DK comprising present DK and Udupi di st.If the airport is named after him , it will be a fitting tribute to the person popularly called as father of the Dakshina Kannada dist. This name should be acceptable to sections.

    The airport is in Mangalore, so don't confuse the public as well as the tourist from India and international tourist. What name is there now is God willingly is good. continue as Mangalure International Airport. Please don't politicize nor bring religion here also.

    Adani said FAHEDANI they left IXE airport discovered that this airport has no growth and it has been stagnant absolutely dead. No international aircraft ever landed or no hopes too. People use alternative airport for easy and convenient connections. Look at CCN airport brand new with remarkable growth..

    I don't understand why are people behind renaming mangalore airport 🤦‍♂️ Mangaluru International Airport itself is good...Instead I wonder why can't people demand to increase flight services from Mlore to more domestic and international destinations and expand the runway for enabling larger aircrafts to land.. Mangalore is an educational and tourist hub yet lacks flight connectivity to major domestic cities like Delhi, Pune, Cochin, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Trivandrum, Goa, etc. In addition, it's high time mangalore gets additional flight services to gulf cities! Despite having connectivity to just 5 domestic destinations (Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Coimbatore) the traffic from Mlore was very high, clearly indicating the potential n demand from Mangalore... High time airline and airport officials do the needful and increase the overall connectivity from Mangalore
