Kasargod, Dec 13: It is learnt that Shamim (20), son of Mohammed Kunhi from Bekal Mooval village in the district, met an untimely death out of starvation and thirst in Saudi Arabia. The incident occurred at Al Hassa city on Saudi Arabia’s border with Qatar.

It is learnt that a relative of Shamim is employed with an Arab in Qatar. With his help, Shamim bagged an employment with another Arab, for grazing of goats in a desert. The youngster found it hard to oversee the goats under hot sun, but his employer was unrelenting. As such, he escaped from there, went to his relative’s home located in the city, and told him that he could not bear the agony of working in desert under hot sun.

The boy’s employer was searching for him, and the relative, fearing for his own job, handed the boy back to his employer. The boy was again entrusted the job of supervising the goats, it is learnt. After a few weeks, he got frustrated, and started running in another direction. He lost his way in the desert, and his body was recovered from Hassa – Hufoof in Al Hassa on Saudi Arabian border. The post mortem reports confirmed that he had died of starvation and thirst. Later, his identification was established.

With the help of members of KMCC Qatar, Moiddin Addur and Mujeeb Chembarika belonging to Al Hassa KMCC and others, his body was buried in Salahia mosque in Al Hassa.

Mr. A.Shareef Ahmed... As you say,THE GUILTY MUST BE PUNISHED...He is a saudi national at first place, whereby he will get guarded by his own laws and we will never be able to make a move to punish him. Only the almighty should take action for this henious crime done. I think the crime rate is the highest in the religious country which we call SAUDI ARABIA. But who cares ??

The lure of money and a better life takes us away from our homelands to faraway places. In some cases we find an easier life and more money in this quest. But sometimes, the story is not as happy, when the weak is taken advantage of by someone in position the position of power overt hat person. I wonder how many people benefited from poor Shamim, right from the middleman who promised him riches in the middle east to the employer who cruelly took advantage of him. may his soul rest in peace.

I know many of the basic rights, we immigrants in the US take for granted are not accorded to those in the middle eastern countries. The actions of his friend who instead of protecting him and turning in the unrelenting employer to authorities, chose to turn his friend to the employer speaks volumes about the lack of basic rights for immigrants in these middle eastern countries.

I have long admired some of the Islamic traditions like Ramadhan where a Muslim treats others of his religion as his own brother and feeds him. But actions like this bring to question the values of these rituals.
