Bantwal, Dec 7: Sushant (10), a fifth standard student of St John Higher Primary School in Allipade in the taluk, who was a resident of Vachchar near Sarapady, lost his life on Sunday December 5 evening, while supposedly trying some adventure at his room. Sushant was a brilliant student and was active in all extra curricular activities including annual day programme of the school.
It is gathered that the boy had bolted the door of his room from inside, and hung the white thread being issued to scouts from the fan. He then hung himself by holding two ends of the thread with his hands. His mother, who was rolling bidis in another part of the house, was not aware of what was happening. The parents later saw from the window of the room that the boy had lost life, while hanging from the thread. The family members were inconsolable, as they felt that the boy would have been saved if they had watched what he was doing a few minutes earlier.
The thread had not got tightened around his neck. It was just touching the front portion of the neck, pressing the windpipe. Still, the boy had not fallen off to the ground.
On Monday, the school declared a holiday as a mark of respect for Sushant. Addressing the students at the condolence meeting, headmistress of the school, Irene Mascarenhas, warned the students to avoid watching television programmes and stay away from undertaking any adventures on their own.
