Mangalore, Dec 6: Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner (DC), Subodh Yadav, has made it mandatory for all the buses in the district to fix global positioning system (GPS) in them before December 31 this year. He said that GPS helps Regional Transport Authority to properly verify the veracity of passenger complaints, to regulate running of buses on unscheduled routes, to ensure that buses stick to time schedules, and to have a general control over the mass transport system in the district.
He has asked for convening of a meeting of the regional transport office, police department, and bus owners in this connection, at an early date. “Bus drivers and conductors should compulsorily wear uniforms. If it is found that buses are stopped on the roads and passengers are picked from there, strict action will be taken against them,” he warned.
The DC wanted rural permit auto rickshaws to have different colour to differentiate them from the city auto rickshaws. “It has been decided preliminarily to share 50% of the cost of railway under bridge at Padil in the city. Prepaid auto stands will be set up at the railway station and KSRTC bus stand as per a recent decision,” he added.
Yadav has asked the waste of the construction projects in the city to be dumped in the site earmarked for setting up of the new bus stand near Pumpwell in the city. He said that dumping of waste at various places including sides of the national highway has been strictly banned, and warned that violators will face stern action. He informed that roads connecting the new bus stand at Pumpwell would be built shortly.
