Mangaluru, Jan 4: after the implementation of motor vehicles (amendment) act in 2019, the number of accidents have reduced in the country. However, the intensity of the accidents has raised, which has caused concern to the administration.
It is believed that lockdown due to coronavirus might be reason for reduction in the accident. According to George Cherian, director of CUTS international organization of Bengaluru, the impact of the accidents is more as the vehicles ply at overspeed on empty roads. He says that many do not know what is there in motor vehicles act.

According to a study around 11% of the accidents that take place in the world happen in India. In 2019 1.54 lac people died in India in 4.37 lac road accidents. The number of injured is 4.39 lac. In 70 percent of the accidents over speeding is the main cause. However, compared to 2019, the number of accidents have reduced by 18 percent in 2020. In 2020, 1.33 lac people died in 3.54 lac road accidents. Among the dead 47.8% are youths in the age group of 18-35 years.
In the state of Karnataka in 2018, 10,990 people died. The numbers for 2019 and 2020 are 10,958 and 9,760 respectively. Till October 2021 the number of deaths were 7,000. Out of this 13 percent are pedestrians.
In Mangaluru, according to the police department, 692 accidents took place in 2021 and 116 people died. Compared to other days of the week, most accidents happen on Sundays. That too in the time period of 3 am to 6am 21 percent and six to nine am, 20 percent accidents have taken place. Drunken driving, negligence and high speed are the reasons for accidents. In areas like Lalbagh and Urwa Stores 41% of accidents have taken place.
