Kadaba, Jan 2: Alankar gram panchayat (GP) which took the waste disposal and management as a challenge converts the wet waste that is generated into manure. In addition, it uses the same manure for the coconut farm under its ownership resulting in abundant coconut crop.
The wet waste that is collected by the gram panchayat is used as manure for around 250 coconut trees on 2.5 acre of land. All the trees are giving excellent yield. The gram panchayat expects good revenue from the sale of coconuts also.
The surplus manure is collected in the waste cement bin and is used to prepare earthworm manure. Rain water pits are made throughout the farmland also. In addition to coconut trees, the farm land also has jasmine and some fruit trees also.
Naveen Bhandary, CEO of Kadaba taluk panchayat says, “Managing waste is a big challenge to all the panchayats. Using the waste in a profitable manner is still difficult. The effort of Alankar gram panchayat of not only converting the wet waste into manure but also using it for farm land is exceptional. It is a role model to other panchayats and municipalities.”
