Udupi, Dec 22: "It is essential to raise the women's age for marriage to 21 years. The union government has introduced this change to empower women," said a member of National Commission for Women, Shyamala Kunder.
She further said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ programme to educate women. But, in most of the places, a girl is married off at the age of 18 and her education is stopped.
“There are several instances where the women cannot receive their degrees, but got married under parents’ pressure.
“The girl who attends turns 18 will not be mentally prepared for marriage. Hence, the National Commission for Women has suggested the government to increase the age of marriage to 21 years.
“Through reports, it is been proved that if the girl is made to get married in her college days, it will impact her mental health.
“In India, out of 1,00,000 newborn babies, 113 die before they are 30 days old. The reason behind this is that the mothers are too young in many cases. Hence, to prevent child marriage completely, it is essential to table this bill,” she said.
