Mangaluru/Udupi, Dec 19: Dakshina Kannada on Sunday December 19 reported a spike of 37 new infections while Udupi reported only two new cases. Udupi registered the only death in the state on Sunday.
As per the Dakshina Kannada district health bulletin, the total number of positive cases in the district has risen to 1,16,188, out of which 183 are currently active.
The sudden increase in Dakshina Kannada's tally is mainly due to two clusters found in two educational institutions, one each in Bantwal and Mangaluru, where out of a total of 33 cases, five were found to be of Omicron variant.
A total of 25 patients were discharged from hospitals on Sunday, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,14,318.
The death toll in the district so far stands at 1,699, out of which five are non-Covid deaths. No death was reported on Sunday.
The district administration has urged people to strictly continue maintaining social distance in public places and wear masks when stepping out of the house. Anyone not wearing a mask would be fined by the authority.
So far, the district administration has collected Rs 1,09,86,370 as fine in 90,921 incidents of mask violation.
Udupi
As per the district health bulletin, as many as 13,33,524 samples have been tested so far.
Only two new cases were reported on Sunday, taking the total number of cases to 76,980, out of which 25 are currently active.
Six patients were discharged from hospitals on Sunday, taking the total number of recoveries to 76,477.
Both the new patients are in home isolation, and one is asymptomatic and the other symptomatic.

Coronavirus has claimed 478 lives in the district so far, including one on Sunday. The person who died was a 74-year-old female resident of Kundapur.
So far, 9,52,564 people have received the first dose of vaccination, while 7,90,920 have received the second dose.
A total of 53 cases of mucormycosis (black fungus) have been reported in the district so far, and all have recovered.
