Puttur, Nov 27:  Periyashanti Cross near Nelyady, where several robberies had occurred in the past, witnessed another such incident on the morning of Friday November 26. A pilgrim from Bangalore was beaten up badly, before being robbed, by a gang.

Shivananjappa from Peenya, Bangalore, who is on a pilgrimage to Dharmasthala, arrived in a bus and got down at Periyashanti Cross on national highway 48, from where a road leads to Dharmasthala. He was waiting for a vehicle to reach the temple town, when a gang of four, which came in an auto rickshaw, unexpectedly started thrashing him. After beating him up, the gang fled with Rs 4,800 he had in his possession.

Shivananjanppa is being treated in a hospital here. Periyashanti Cross, with thick forest all around, is an ideal spot for hooligans to waylay people and rob them. In the past, gangs have intercepted vehicles and robbed belongings of the travellers.
