Udupi, Nov 22: Local women blocked the rural road linking Padu Nilavar with Bavalikudru at Nilavar, near here on Friday November 19, alleging that the trucks engaged in illegal sand mining have caused damage to the vital link to their neighbourhood.

The local women alleged that nearly 50 truck-loads of sand are illegally transported from the river bank near their village daily. The continuous plying of heavily laden trucks has left the access road unfit for motoring.

Brahmavar sub-inspector Hosakerappa arrived on the spot along with policemen and instructed the truck drivers not to source sand from their village.

The local women also presented a memorandum to the head of the gram panchayat asking him not to issue permits for sand mining as the trucks have widely damaged the roads by causing huge potholes.
