Mangaluru, Dec 4: A Mangalore University study team has found 43,118 butterflies spread over 175 varieties at eight places across Dakshina Kannada district, right from thick forests and the foot of the Western Ghats, to the sea shores.
Under the guidance of Yenepoya University researcher, Dr R Shyamprasad Rao and the association of National Centre for Biological Sciences Bengaluru, Deepak Naik and Dr M S Mustaq conducted this study. On the basis of survey lasting two years, the researchers have recorded the multi favour designs of the butterflies in Western Ghats and the areas which they love to inhabit.
Most prominent varieties of butterflies in Western Ghats are common crows, common emigrant, common farirang, twani coster, lester gras blue, rustic and chocolate fancy. Some of the varieties are localised. This study will appear in the Journal of Insect Conservation.
