Mangalore: National Seminar on Fr Sebastian Kappen on Nov 23

Mangalore, Nov 16:
A national-level seminar will be organized jointly by the Mangalore diocesan chair in Christianity, Social Justice Forum, Mangalore and the Catholic Priests’ Conference of India on Sebastian Kappen and the role of religion and culture in social transformation, at Jyoti Nivas Hall, Shanti Kiran here on November 23.
 
Fr Sebastian Kappen, a well-known theologian, was a pioneer thinker and a social activist who combined the spirituality of Jesus with Marxian thought. He paved the way for the dialogue between the Christian world and secular ideologies. He lived, reflected and struggled in his mission with youth, both in university and common and intellectuals and professionals.
 
Dr Michael Tharakan, vice-chancellor of Kannur University will inaugurate the seminar and deliver the inaugural address. Dr Jacob Parappally will deliver the keynote address. Fr Joseph Lobo will appraise the audience on the theological legacy of Fr Sebastian Kappen. Dr X D Selvaraj, Tuticorin, will speak about the role of culture in social transformation.
 
Fr  M K George will engage the afternoon session with his talk on the spirituality in the New Age of Colonization followed by a talk by Dr Dexter Maben on "Decolonizing Theology: Challenges and Possibilities. The talk will be followed by a group discussion.
