Mangalore, Nov 16: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, and president of Rehabilitation Committee, Subodh Yadav, stressed that ONGC and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd are responsible for providing training and employment to the children of families displaced due to the acquisition of their lands for the projects of these companies.

He was speaking after presiding over a meeting convened in the city on Monday November 15 to discuss the opportunities available to the families displaced by the projects of companies in the district.

“As per the rehabilitation package, an interested member aged between 18 and 25 years from each of the affected families has to be provided entrepreneurial training based on their educational qualifications. So far, 207 persons have been provided training in Karnataka Polytechnic here. In the second phase, 211 more persons are to be trained,” he noted.

He said that 85 persons from these families have been absorbed by the companies after providing training to them. He asked the competent authorities to put in honest efforts to provide employment to the members of affected families even outside the special economic zone. He noted that in case none of the members of affected families show interest in getting a job, a one-time compensation of Rs 3.5 lac becomes payable by the company to such families.

MRPL deputy general manager, Lakshmi Kumaran, represented the chairman of MRPL at the meeting.
