Udupi, Nov 10: Chairman of Udupi District Lelgal Services Authority and district and sessions judge, Narendrakumar Gunaki, expressed happiness at the increasing legal awareness among the people, created by a considerable number of legal literacy programmes being held in the district. He was speaking after inaugurating the Legal Awareness Programme organized at the district courts complex here on Tuesday November 9, on the occasion of the National Legal Services Day. The programme was organized by the Legal Services Authority of the district in association with Bar Association Udupi.

He noted that the support and cooperation of the lawyers is very much necessary for spreading legal awareness everywhere. He thanked the lawyers for the support and cooperation extended by them for the considerable success of ‘Lok Adalats’ being held regularly.

Presiding officer of the fast track court here, S L Patil, said that the legal literacy is high in the district. “Most of the programmes were aimed at increasing the level of legal literacy. Many a time, the environment in the society is such that the laws we ourselves framed, are being broken by us. In some cases, misuse of legal provisions is also being noticed. With the spread of legal awareness, such incidents can be stopped,” he felt.

Public prosecutor, T S Jituri, speaking on the subject of Indian Penal Code, said that the people, who often question the legal delivery system, dither in the matter of appearing before courts. He said that spreading legal awareness even to the last person in the country is of paramount importance, as lack of knowledge about legal provisions has been rampant. He pointed that refusal to receive complaints by the police stations can be reported to the district superintendents of police, and that this can be done even through post.

Assistant public prosecutor, Raju Poojary, spoke on the ‘general information about criminal law’. President of the local unit of the Bar Association, Vijay Hegde, presided.

Chief civil judge, Savitri V Bhat, Bar Association vice president, T Vijay Kumar Shetty, general secretary, Reynold Pravin Kumar, advocate, Y T Raghavendra among others were present.
