Mangaluru, Nov 1: A permanent study centre for illiterate and semi-literate inmates of district prison in the city was inaugurated on Monday November 1 under the auspices of district prison and reformer services, Public education directorate of Bengaluru, district administration, zilla panchayat and district literacy committee at the district prison in the city.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rajendra K V, deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district said, “Government has provided an opportunity for illiterate and semi-literate inmates of the prison through this programme. Inmates should use this facility and reform themselves as good citizens of the society.”
Chandan J Patel, jail superintendent, who presided over the function said, “This is a unique programme of its kind in the whole country and is started in all prisons of Karnataka at a time from November 1. The main aim of this programme is of making the illiterate prisoners into literate when they leave the prison after serving their term. Another speciality of this programme is that the literate prisoners will help the illiterate prisoners in this programme.”
Justice Dharmagiri Ramaswamy Subbanna, chief civil judge, Dr Kumar, CEO of zilla panchayat, Madan Mohan, assistant commssioner, Ravish Nayak, ACP, Sudhakar, district adult education officer and Sheena Shetty, director of Janashikshana trust were present.
Study kit was distributed to nine illiterate and five semi-literate inmates of the prison during the programme.
