Mangalore, Nov 5: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, Subodh Yadav, while extending Deepavali wishes to the people of the district, has asked the people to be very cautious while firing crackers, as a little bit of carelessness can pose them to the danger of getting burnt or losing their eyesight. He said that the students have been educated about these dangers through the education department.
Both the state environment pollution control board and the police department have issued guidelines to the people, who plan to have fun with crackers, to save themselves and others from fire exigencies.
Sale of crackers which creates more than 125 decibels of sound at a distance of four metres has been banned. Sale and usage of crackers have also been banned between 10 pm and 6 am. Fire crackers should not be used near the courts and hospitals, the guidelines explained.
For lighting the crackers, either a candle or a scented stick should be used from a distance. Firing them directly with hands can prove to be dangerous. Sand, water and other fire fighting equipments should be kept handy before burning crackers. The crackers should not be ignited after placing them in utensils, bottles, etc. Wherever the crackers come with flying objects like rockets, they should not be fired at places where they face any obstacles like trees in their paths. Burning of crackers within a radius of two kms from hazardous industries like Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd has also been banned.
Crackers should not be burnt inside the houses, public places and roads. People have been advised against making experiments and playing with crackers, and not to manufacture them on their own. Efforts should not be made to burn the crackers which fail to ignite at the first attempt. Instead, after waiting for 20 minutes, they should be soaked in water. Illegally made crackers can be life-threatening. As such, they should not be bought or used, the departments have warned.
