Hebri, Oct 30: After a Tata goods vehicle went out of the driver's control when negotiating the tenth bend on the road from Agumbe Ghat to Udupi, the vehicle plunged down a precipice that is 50 to 60 feet deep. Four persons including the driver were killed on the spot while five suffered injuries of various degrees. This accident happened on Friday October 29.
Driver of the vehicle, Yajnesh (30), cleaner, Shreejit (18), and loaders, R P Manjunath (38) and Manikanta (28) became victims of the accident. Ganesh, Syed Asif, Mahadev, Nagaraj and Manjunath Gowda, who were injured, are being treated in the government hospital in Karkala. It is said that the deceased were from Tamil Nadu and N R Pura area in Chikkamagaluru district. They were working in Miyar, Karkala.
Rocks meant for carving work had been loaded into the vehicle at Karkala. The vehicle was moving towards Taggarse, Shikaripur when the accident happened. The intensity of the accident was so high that the vehicle smashed the protective wall in the Ghat section and the lorry turned turtle. All the people in the vehicle including the driver were thrown into the precipice. Four mutilated bodies which were stuck between rocks were retrieved later.
The bodies were brought out with the joint operation of the locals, police department and fire brigade personnel that lasted for several hours. Udupi district superintendent of police, Vishnuvardhan, additional superintendent of police, Kumar Chandra, deputy superintendent of police, Vijayaprakash, Karkala town station house officer, Madhu B and Hebri station house officer, Mahesh T, visited the spot and coordinated the work.
