Mangalore, Nov 2: On the occasion of the death centenary of Fr Augustus Muller, a memorial oration was held on the Tuesday November 2 at 3 pm in the academy hall of Fr Muller Medical College (FMMC).
The oration was delivered by Prof P Balaram, director of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore.
The theme of the memorial oration was 'Science and Medicine Building a Research Interface in India.' He explained the link between medicine, science and engineering and talked on the topics on which he started research and also showed uses of advanced techniques like MRI, CT etc in the field of medicine. He stressed on the revolution it has created in this field. He also showed concern on the diminishing core of universities.
Addressing the gathering, Denzil Lobo, who was also the guest of honour, spoke about the inspiring life of Fr Augustus Muller. He briefly touched upon the great journey undertaken by Fr Augustus Muller from Germany to the city of Mangalore and the way in which he revolutionised healthcare in the city.
The other dignitaries on the dais were director of St Aloysious Institute of Management and Information Technology Fr Denzil Lobo, director of FMCI Fr Patrick Rodrigues, administrator of FMMC Fr Denis D'Sa, administrator of FMMCH Fr Richard Coelho, administrator of FMHMC Fr Prakash D'Souza, chief of medical services Dr B Sanjeev Rai, and dean of FMMC Dr J P Alva.
The programme began with the institutional anthem. Fr Patrick Rodrigues delivered the welcome address. This was followed by garlanding of the portrait of FrAugustus Muller by Prof P Balaram.
Fr Denis D'Sa delivered the vote of thanks and informed that there will be an oration every year henceforth.
