Udupi, Oct 27: The municipal officials seized 12 shops by locking them up in an operation conducted on October 25 and 26. These shops, located within the municipal limits, had large amounts of rental overdue. They had failed to pay rent only for the period of Covid but also other occasions. The officials singled out only those shops which did not pay rent pertaining to the period other than the coronavirus wave period.
Several business establishments located in a commercial building owned by the municipality within the city have not been remitting the rental dues. The dues run into lacs of rupees.
The people had also complained that some persons had created shops in the building on their own where they do business without paying any rent to the municipality. On this basis, the officials took up action. The officials took action against shops which had not paid rent for a long period. They locked shops which had not cleared rental overdue. Revenue officer of the municipality, Dhananjaya, said that in the coming days, stricter action would be undertaken and asked the businesses to pay rent properly. He also warned that those who sublet their shops will face strict action.
