Mangalore, Oct 27: Citizens were woken up out of their sound morning sleep at around 4 am on Wednesday October 26, as heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunder started hitting the entire coast. While thunder and lightning continued for about one and half hours, rains continued to soak the two districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada even thereafter.
On Tuesday, the rains remained weak, with only Subrahmanya in Dakshina Kannada district getting good rains with lightning in the evening. Other areas enjoyed a sunny weather all through Tuesday.
In Chikmagalur district, two children, Renukaswamy (10) and Vijeta (13), who were related to each other, were killed when lightning struck. The two children, who had visited their fields with their parents, had sheltered under a tamarind tree because of rain, when tragedy struck. The incident occurred at Mundre village near Birur in the district.
A release from the meteorological department said that a few places in the coast and hinterlands are expected to receive light to normal rains. This prediction is valid till Thursday morning.
