Kolkata, Oct 20 (IANS) Renowned soccer club Mohammedan Sporting Tuesday roped in former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly as the brand ambassador for the Mohammedan Sporting Platinum Jubilee Cup being held to celebrate its triumph in the 1934 Calcutta Football League.
Mohammedan Sporting had then defeated Dalhousie Club to lift the league.
"Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, who is also a football lover, has given his consent to be the brand ambassador for the Mohammedan Sporting Platinum Jubilee Cup. He will also don the black and white jersey of Mohammedan Sporting Club," Club president Sultan Ahmed said here.
East Bengal, Mohan Bagan, England's Sheffield Football Club and host Mohammedan Sporting will be the four teams in the tournament, which is to be played on a knock-out basis at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium Nov 12 and Nov 14.
"Sheffield Football Club based at Yorkshire in UK has agreed to come to the city for the tournament and be a part of the glorious moment," said Ahmed.
The postal department will launch a special cover to commemorate the club's rich history. "At the moment, we are working on the design of the cover," Ahmed added.
The premier football club is also set to introduce "Mohammedan Jewels" - an award to honour its former players, coaches and officials. The club will also introduce "Mohammedan Youth Scholarship" for the most talented youth footballers of Bengal. Every year, three youth footballers will be awarded cash scholarships.
