BANGALORE, Oct 12: Thanks to the decision of the Division Bench of Karnataka High Court to defer the hearing and possible ruling on the writ petitions filed by the 16 disqualified MLAs challenging the decision of the Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah till October 18, the beleaguered Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has accepted the ``second chance” offered by Governor H R Bhardwaj to prove his majority in the House by October 11 am on October 14.
Yeddyurappa, who had taken exception to the sudden turnaround by the governor and offer of the second chance to prove majority when his government had demonstrated its strength in the assembly by voice vote, has agreed to take up the offer.
The Chief Minister has informed Raj Bhavan in writing, through a letter sent by his principal secretary I S N Prasad, of his decision to offer a second opportunity to prove his majority.
Yeddyurappa, who has rushed to Delhi along with all the 105 BJP MLAs, including ministers, for a parade before Rashtrapathi Bhavan on Tuesday evening, has decided to cut short his Delhi visit and return to Bangalore. The Chief Minister and MLAs are expected to reach Bangalore by 8 pm or 9 pm.
Meanwhile, former Union Minister and Karnataka Government’s Special Representative in Delhi Dhananjaya Kumar, who spoke to DAIJIWORLD from Delhi, confirmed that the party’s high command had directed Yeddyurappa to take up the offer and prove the Government’s majority again.
``We have been claiming from the beginning that the Government has a clear majority in the House. We had reservations about the Governor’s quixotic decisions and interference in the functioning of the Speaker and the Government. But at no point of time, we had any reservations or doubts about the Government’s majority,” he said.
Asked about the deferment of the hearing on the disqualification of the 16 MLAs by the High Court, Dhananjaya Kumar contended that it was a decision taken by the Speaker in accordance with the rules and 10th Schedule of the Constitution or anti-defection law.
``The Governor cannot question the decision, though the aggrieved parties can challenge the same in courts. We will abide by the Court verdict,” he said.
