Mangalore, Oct 5: The postgraduation department of social work which has stepped into decennial year has organized a two-day national seminar, Samprathi - 2010 on the topic “India today - Challenges for the future, a platform to discuss and deliberate social, economic, political and ecological spheres likely to influence the future of India.
The event was inaugurated at the Eric Mathias Hall of college here on Tuesday October 5. In the symbolic inauguration the dignitaries, chied guest Dr S A Bari, vice chancellor, Kuvempu University, Fr Swebert D ‘Silva, principal, St Aloysuis College, Fr Joseph Rodrigues, rector, St Aloysius Institutions, Loveena Lobo, head of MSW Dept, Bharathi, seminar convenor and Vijaykumar the student co-ordinator lit lamps on the map which symbolized today's India.
Loveena Lobo explained the significance of the seminar.
Addressing the gathering, Bari mentioned about the wide range of opportunities for the MSW students. He spoke about the challenges involved in nation building focusing particularly on the challenges that come from within oneself which requires a SWOT analysis to be done by each and everyone of us, since internal challenges and threats are more dangerous than the external ones, he observed.
He said, "Internal threats like intolerance and social injustice can become the enemy within. He thus appealed the participants to conquer these threats and strike out the imbalance between the rich and the poor." He emphasized on the need of protecting and preserving the environment for the future rather than just the attainment of targeted GNP.
Principal Fr Swebert D’Silva briefed the participants about St Aloysius College. He then appealed to the students to have a vision for the country and be part of it which would help in making the best contribution and thus give rise to a harmonious country.
President of the programme Fr Joseph Rodrigues quoted statistics to show the growing status of the country. He focused on the need to be aware of our cultural heritage and thus not look for alternatives.
Bharathi, seminar convenor welcomed and Vijaykumar, student co-ordinator proposed the vote of thanks.
