Mangalore, Sep 28: The state-level workshop on “Hands-on experience in construction and standardization of research tools” was inaugurated at Unity College of Nursing, Ashok Nagar, Shediguri here on Monday September 27.
Prof G Chithra, vice-principal, Unity Academy of Education welcomed the gathering. The theme of the workshop was declared by Prof Vimala Prasad, principal, Unity Academy of Education, who also emphasized the motive of selecting the theme. The theme was selected not only to give information but also to develop the skills of the delegates to construct and standardize research tools with the practical
session which is planned throughout workshop.
Prof Irene Veigas, principal, Sahyadri College of Nursing through her keynote address stated that nursing
research is a great venture. In the current era there is a need for every nurses to improve their professional practice and professional image. She stressed on some of the myth to be removed and qualities to posses by the new researchers. She congratulated the management and the faculties for
organizing such a great workshop.
In his presidential address, Dr Sanjay Shahri, chief intensivist, Unity Health Complex expressed his
concern that many research which is conducted is mostly used for publication and presentation, whereas the research by the nurses should be clinical based so that it would be useful for the patient care.

Scientific sessions were conducted by the experts from the field of nursing, research, psychology and
statistics. The workshop concentrated on various aspects of tool construction and standardization
such as the concepts of measurement and evaluation, construction of different research tools,
standardization procedures, qualitative measurement tools, item analysis and interpretation.
About 250 delegates comprising postgraduate students and faculty from all over the state including ursing as well as allied health professions participated in the workshop.
