Udupi, Aug 22: Legendary 'kaddayi' artiste Guruva Koraga passed away here on Sunday August 22. He was 105.
Hailing from Guddeangadi of Hiriyadka, Guruva started playing kaddayi (dollu) at the age of 12 years. He was also into farming and weaving baskets.
He was recognized at the national level in 1988 through Mangaluru Akashavani. He had dedicated his life to conservation of rich heritage and culture. He worked hard for the conservation of tribal cultures.
Guruva passed on his knowledge and skills with kaddayi to youngsters, training them in the art of playing the instrument.
He was active even after crossing 100 years. At the age of 102, he used to play the kaddayi for two hours a day.
For his accomplishments, he was conferred several prestigious awards, including Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 2018. Karnataka Janapada Academy honoured him in 2017.
