Mangaluru: Battery-driven auto rickshaws give rise to panic

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 6: Battery-driven auto rickshaws have started operations in the city. They run smoothly without pollution. The fact that these auto rickshaws have been extended with several concessions has given rise to a sense of apprehension in the minds of traditional auto rickshaw owners and drivers.

Now, Mahindra Treo auto rickshaws have hit the roads. For the drivers, these rickshaws are easy to handle as there is no need to change gears. It moves ahead on D mode, R mode for reverse, and also M, L and H buttons which mean medium, low and high speed modes. The three-wheelers accommodate 1+3 passengers and run for 130 kms once they are fully charged. These auto rickshaws come with a display which shows how many kms covered, how much charge is available, and how many more kms can be covered with the charge.

The fact that the battery driven autos can be operated without any permits as per the rules framed by the central government, there is worry of high number of auto rickshaws crowding the roads, which might give rise to friction with the traditional auto operators. Regional transport deputy commissioner Udupi, R M Varnekar, said that the department has written to the government seeking to frame licence rules as traffic congestion and friction might otherwise occur. The district auto drivers association has warned that unless uniform licence rules are implemented, they may have to resort to agitation.

Great to see electric Autos in Mangalore roads, good start to pollution control in public transport sector. However to ensure public safety, Government must allow only licensed individuals to run any mode of public transport. Besides, slow and systematic transition to electric autos is better for drivers as they make more profits & thus fares can reduce. Government should support by offering subsidized interest rates plan to banks so more drivers can Trade-in/replace their petroleum autos with electric ones.

we should support these battery 3 wheelers for the city limits. Anyhow the these cannot move on mud roads with steep ups and downs. The pollution's will come down slowly.

I bet 90% of these auto-rickshaws parts are imported from China/taiwan. We will all be at the mercy of outsiders and the government wants bilateral trade to help india's economy. Name one thing in India besides gobar and beaureaucracy which is uniquely Indian?

Instead of worrying, sell your fossil fuel based vehicles and buy an electric one. No taxes and other fees. Economic and good for the nature.

For battery run Autos no need of permit . Then the fare charged should be less and reasonable. The fare should be displayed.

It's fine to support battery run auto rickshaws, but there should be some kind of control such as licence charge nominal amount, insurance etc. If a accident happens what is the procedure?

Great innovation and should have taken such step long time ago and we would not reached height of greenhouse effect what the world is facing today. Electric autos dont reqire permit which usually costs quite high amount, no carbon and noice polution and not need to change gears. Only question is pulling power like Lambretta rickshaw. The are meant four rough terrains and takes more than 5 passengers with extra cargo too.

The EV revolution is reviving all over the World and the credit goes to ELON MUSK to paving the way. But our City must have a infrastructure to build charging stations for both commercial and Private Electric Vehicles.

Rickshaw drivers always have created barriers to development. First against Ola and Uber. Now against Electric Rickshaws. They want the city to be stagnated just so they can feel secure. At the cost of pollution and functional efficiency for the larger good. Too bad. Their ignorance is just showing them in poor light. I understand their fears but you can't act so ignorant and stop development.

All r against petrol / diesel auto fine, due to environmental issues ,I too agree, but pl think about the old auto drivers who have their life, family dependent, their children studying consider all these,so government should come with some good plan as not to suck the livelyhood of the old or young who r already earning ,govt should give some scheme where the petrol diesel auto owners can switch to electric one(battery) operated

The govt should continue with license free process for Electric vehicles .. These RTO goons (Vernekar) are not writing to the govt for anybodys good ..its just that they cannot get that under the arm bribe .. This vernekar should be put behind bars for going against the govt rules and regulations .. Electricity vehicles reduce pollutions and will save lot of dependence on Oil rich terror backing nations ..We need to come out of this mould

Haha, what lesson you will teach Modi? If such situation happens and India is at no mercy of Opec countries, it will only help the country. If someone will learn the lessons then it will be the oil producing Sheikhs. India is far behind in terms of grid infrastructure to go complete Hybrid at this stage or atleast another 5 years.

Why should Modi be disappointed and feel lost if everyone opts for electrical vehicle. He is the one urging everybody to reduce oil consumption as it is a big burden for the government to import oil from other countries. Today's raising cost of oil is the gift of UPA government to us.In order to gain votes they subsidised oil price by heavily borrowing from market and other external financial agencies. Now the time has come for repayment of those loans. India can repay those loans only by reducing imports and increasing exports otherwise we may have to go back to pre 1990 days when India had to pledge its entire gold reserve to borrow money from international market to sustain its daily requirements

Bottom line, Congress knew how to keep petroleum prices down and reduce the burden of the common man. BJP only knows to blame others for their screwups, not solve problems.

Check your facts. The so called oil bonds were issued not only by UPA but also by Vajpayee government. While the quantum of oil bonds was only Rs 1.3lakh crore, the enhanced tax collected by the central government in the financial year 2020-21 alone was Rs 3.72 lakh crore. Now decide who is responsible for steep increase in price of petrol and diesel.

Jossey S Thane,it has nothing to do with Modi.but people who live around .They have to inhale diesel stank, not healthy. When they need not have registered number ,will be difficult.Anyone can dry, cause if any accident flee, cant tell who it was.Even uniform to drivers also doesnt make sense .One can throw off uniform if Passsenger goes missing or has problem.

Reduce the minimum tariff for e-rickshaw. They don't have taxes like other autos and reason to say fuel price is high... This will help general public in large.
