Mangaluru: Police dig up roads on Kerala border to curb traffic flow

Mangaluru, Aug 6 (IANS): Police in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district are taking steps to block roads at an entry point from neighbouring Kerala's Kasargod district to prevent unchecked ingress, an official said on Thursday August 5.

A police official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told IANS that over the previous three days, they deployed earthmovers to dig up roads within the jurisdiction of Karnataka to prevent smooth flow of traffic from Kerala.

"It is humanly impossible to keep a check on each and every individual who crosses the border. Therefore, we came up with this idea to prevent the smooth flow of traffic from Kerala for the time being, as Covid cases in Dakshin Kannada are on the rise," he said.

Meanwhile, opposing the move, even local residents staged a sit-in at the Talapady check post in Kasaragod around three days ago alleging that Karnataka Police move was affecting the movement of vehicles entering Kerala from Karnataka. The protestors demanded smooth commuting to Karnataka, without a mandatory RT-PCR certificate.

During the protest, as soon as a person, in heat of argument, crossed the check post, the police took him into custody.

According to a health bulletin released by the Dakshin Kannada district authorities on Wednesday, 350 positive cases were reported on Wednesday and positivity rate stood at 4.07 per cent.

A health officer from Mangaluru told IANS that the number of cases in Dakshina Kannada are far higher compared to Bengaluru, which has a larger population.

"We have to take stringent steps like redirecting the traffic to 12 check-posts in Karnataka where checking can be carried out properly, therefore, at some points they may have dug up roads," he said.

There should be a consensus between both governments regarding inflow of traffic. We should stop considering the people across the borders as pariah. They too have the right to earn and contribute to society. Digging up roads requires lots of efforts which I do appreciate. But it is important to find a more reasonable way. I hope they don't find themselves in predicament when situation need to be rectified.

Sardar Patel United India from smaller states/ Kingdoms. Now ae started dividing India. As we have one Passport, one ID, one Adhar, one GST etc why can't we have unified health policy? Each stare is behaving with whims & fancies. Why center can't intervene?

blaming the state for highest covid prevalence is one thing... but ICMR/central government should do rca (root cause analysis) why this is the state of affairs... what are the factors facilitating for the virus "ease of doing business" with one state more than any other state... what is the magnet attracting various virus to one state... it is not one state's problem, it is country's problem... at this rate whole country, because of one state, has to live in fear of some virus or the other... state government can also enlist some international virologist to get to the bottom of the problem rather being in suppression / denial mode...

the mallu will find ways to sneak in... it is better to have permanent blocks to prevent people from crossing over from kaccha entrances... not through official roads... this will prevent smugglers and drug peddlers and also due to multiplicity of virus plaguing the cent per cent...

Brilliant!!! Why do we need speed barriers, speed breakers, check posts etc ?? Just dig up the roads everywhere. Other novel solutions to age old problems that can be considered for implementation : * Dig up in front of homes and residential apartment buildings. Corona problem will be solved much earlier. * Dig up the National highway at regular intervals. Accidents will reduce. * Dig up the concrete roads within the city. Job creation will happen.

DK is not the only Karnataka district bordering Kerala. Why such curbs only in DK-Kasaragod district borders? TPR is higher in other Kerala districts when compared to Kasaragod. DK MPs MLAS, IAS are all useless and brainless. Their intension is more about blocking people not controlling Corona.

What happened to Kerala model? Frankly speaking as per media praising Kerala all the time, as per their reports people should go to Kerala for treatment & for other things to see the development. But in reality there is nothing called Kerala model, no hospitals, no development, nothing..... No development from decades. Now all are coming to Mangalore for treatment, thereby Covid case count put on Dakshina Kannada. Only shopping malls & Jewellery showrooms doesn't serve any purpose in life.

It is useless blaming the Kerala people First keep your house set right and simply blame the neighbors. I have noticed personally here that most of the people are roaming around without mask and not keeping physical safe distance. How this police personnel digging road like this without any proper planning and approval of the concerned authority? It is a real violation of the law from the personnel who are responsible to keep proper law and order. D.C. and concerned senior official should interfere on such violation and take strict action against all involved. Please also let the public know by the authority whether they will pay for the RTPCR test every now and then for public movement. Our system is totally failed.

Why dig? Both Kasaragod and DK administration should provide enough facility in the border to test and issue passes. Otherwise merge Kasaragod with Karnataka. Problems solved.

Total ban & closure of DK and Kerala border is required as Kerala govt. doesn't do anything to curb spreading of Covid19 in their state. Why pass on to us? In any case, DK is not relying on Kerala. So we should ban human movement until Kerala takes concrete steps to curb the pandemic. Jai Hind.
