Mangaluru, Aug 1: MLC and former general secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) B K Hariprasad on Sunday August 1 lashed out at the ruling BJP and said that the government was attempting to 'change' the Constitution and that those who go against the Constitution were 'traitors'.
Hariprasad was addressing the oath-taking ceremony of Vishwas Kumar Das, president of Dakshina Kannada Congress unit of backward classes on Sunday at the district Congress office at Mallikatta in the city.
"After the Constitution of India was formed, equal rights were given to upper caste, backward classes and lower class people in our society. Those who go against such a Constitution are the real traitors," Hariprasad said.
He further said, "Ever since the BJP attained power in the country, the nation has been going down a different path. A plot is being hatched to change the Constitution. People of lower classes and backward classes are being trampled. We do not want the ideology of Nathuram Godse. What we need is the thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi.
"The Constitution is very important for every Indian. It has the power to wipe off the tears and provide power and justice to the lowest category of people living in society. It is condemnable that such a sacred Constitution is being changed," he added.
"Backward classes are being instigated in the name of caste and religion. Only if this is taken seriously and the Constitution is protected will this country have a bright future. Backward classes who are in large numbers should unite for their justice and protection," Hariprasad said.
Addressing the gathering, M D Laxminarayana, state president of Congress backward classes unit said, "BJP has attained power in center and state by focusing on Hindutva. But now all are regretting. The role of organization of backward classes will play a vital role in bringing Congress back to power in the state in the next assembly elections."
The programme was presided over by DCP president Harish Kumar. MLA U T Khader, former minister Ramanath Rai, Abhaychandra Jain, former MLAs J R Lobo, Mohiuddin Bava, Shakuntala Shetty, Ivan D’Souza and P V Mohan were present.
