Mangalore, Sep 15: Asiyamma, 60, wife of the late Mammunhi, resident of Mimpri in Meenadi, Kinya village near Ullal, was reportedly slain by her neighbour, Mohammed Iqbal, on Tuesday September 14. The Ullal policemen later arrested the accused.
Reportedly, Asiyamma had visited her neighbourer, Mariamma, on Tuesday to collect the pants of her son, given to Mariamma for stitching. As Mariyamma was sitting at the back of her home at the time, cleaning and cutting fish, Asiaymma started chatting with her. In the meanwhile, Mohammed Iqbal, son of Nebisa, sister of Mariyamma, rushed to the spot with a sickle in his hand, and hit Asiyamma indiscriminately, inflicting serious injuries to her abdomen, arm, head and neck. Asiyamma, who died on the spot, is survived by two sons and a daughter.
Hearing the shouts of Asiyamma, neighbourers rushed to the spot, but Iqbal escaped from the spot. He was arrested by the policemen from a plantation in Paneeru in Derlakatte shortly thereafter.
Prima facie, no plausible reasons have been attributed to the above murder. Some claim that the accused is mentally unsound, while some sources say that Iqbal is addicted to hemp, and that Asiyamma’s son and Iqbal had some rivalry relating to scrap business.
Deputy commissioner of police, Ramesh Kumar, city rural circle inspector, Lingappa Poojary, Ullal sub-inspectors of police, T D Nagaraj and Shyamsundar, visited the spot. Investigations are on.
