Legendary Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar passes away at 98

Mumbai Jul 7 (IANS): Veteran Bollywood actor Mohammed Yusuf Khan, world-famous as Dilip Kumar, passed away here in the early hours of Wednesday, his family and aides said.

"With a heavy heart and profound grief, I announce the passing away of our beloved Dilip Saab a few minutes ago. We are from God and to Him we return," said the thespian's longtime aide Faisal Farooqui in a tweet.

Dilip Kumar had been admitted to the P.D. Hinduja Hospital on June 30 for a variety of age-related health issues. His wife Saira Banu Khan had earlier tweeted about his improving medical condition. But that was a shortlived glimmer of hope.

Kumar’s career spans over five decades with hits like ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Naya Daur’, and ‘Ram Aur Shyam’ with his last appearance being in the 1998 film “Qila". The vetera actor was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1994 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015 for his contribution to Indian cinema.

In addition, the Pakistan government also honoured him with its highest civilian honour ‘Nishan-e-Imtiaz’ in 1997.

He lived his life span ... lived life to the fullest. During his life time, I remember there were a section of the public who used to send out hoax messages - it happened atleast on 5 occasions stating that he had indeed passed away even during his ill health. Now there will be no future hoax messages. His house in Bombay was not spared either as it was also attacked several times by furious mobs. Some people hated him basically because he was a Pakistani national.

Dilip Kumar missed his century. In theatre people use to shout awaaz awaaz as he his giving dialogue in slow pitch. Everybody left one by one...Raj Kapoor, Devanand and now Dilip Kumar.
