Mangalore: Infosys Hosts Sixth Annual Scholars Quiz

Mangalore, Sep 8: Infosys Mangalore hosted 'Scholars 2010,' an annual inter-high school quiz competition recently for the students of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. As many as 95 schools took part in the event.

This is the sixth consecutive year that Infosys has conducted this quiz. Kannada and English quizzes were conducted for the students based on their medium of education. After the preliminary written test, 12 teams (six from Kannada and six from English) were short listed for the finals.

Karthik K and Robin Joseph Sera from Sacred Hearts School, Madanthyar, Manikya B S and Prahlad Kamath from Sri Venkataramana English High School, Kundapur were the winners of the Scholars 2010 Kannada and English quizzes respectively.

The cash prizes and trophies were distributed by Gopikrishnan Konnanath, DC head, Infosys Mangalore. The welcome note was delivered by Sudheer Pai, HR manager. Narendran Koduvattat, managing director, I Point Consulting graced the occasion as the chief guest. Quiz masters Supreetha and Girish Baliga kept the audience and teams on the edge of their seats with innovative and interesting questions.

A tour of Infosys Mangalore facility was also arranged for the students and their guardians.

    Mangalore is one of the worst place to live and settle down. The living standard and cost of living is same as all metros like Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad etc. with none of the amenities. I did the biggest mistake of my life by accepting an employment with Infosys Mangalore. Their office is 25 kms outside the city in some "dark-age" village. There are no amenities next to the new Infosys office in this village - no schools, colleges, hospitals, malls, jobs for your better-halves. So, the only option is to stay in the city, a small and congested place 5 km in radius.

    This has resulted in cost of living being jacked up by the locals in the city. Helplessness of outsiders is a major source of livelihood for these locals. They charge heavily for everything - house rent, rickshaw, school donations etc. With limited supply available of these rental flats and school seats, the outsiders are forced to accept these demands and pay heavily through their nose. Add to this, the roads to the new office is so pathetically maintained that it takes more than 1.5 hrs each way to travel to office.

    If you ask the management why they have opened offices in such god forsaken places, the reply we get is that karnataka government has given land at throw away prices.
    My recommendation - STAY AWAY FROM MANGALORE INFOSYS

    This is one of the great initiatives run by Infosys, and more importantly the Infosys volunteers who set aside their personal time during weekends to execute this event.
