Chikkamagaluru, Jul 5: Members of child welfare committee had complained to Sringeri police station about the alleged sexual atrocity on a minor girl from Sringeri by many men. The police are continuing with their investigation. The police have so far filed 30 charge sheets in the case. They have also succeeded in arresting 42 accused.
Om January 30 this year, the Child Welfare Committee members had complained to Sringeri station, accusing several men of using a minor girl to meet their sexual desires. The police who went to investigate, were shocked to learn about the number of rapists involved. A woman who claims to be the aunt of the girl is the kingpin of the racket.

After the police chased the rapists, the case also acquired some political overtones. But the policemen, not bothered by political interference, went ahead and arrested 42 persons. Charges sheets against 30 among them have been filed in the special Protection of Children from Sexual Abuse Act court in this case. More charge sheets are likely to be filed soon. In the history of the district, this is the only case in which such a huge number of charge sheets have been filed in a single case.
With the increased number of arrests, the number of charge sheets is increasing. It may be recalled that the Congress women's unit state president had led a protest in Sringeri, alleging that the case is being sabotaged. A police sub-inspector was transferred for bungling in the case. A police circle inspector was suspended. The investigation is currently headed by assistant superintendent of police, Shruthi, who is camping in Sringeri. More arrests are likely in the case, sources say.
