Puttur, Jul 3: The city police, who took up probe into the incident in which the statue of Mahatma Gandhi installed at the Gandhikatte in the city had been defaced, have realised that the act was the handiwork of a mentally unsound person. The police who took up investigation in all earnestness, verified CCTV camera installed nearby and found out the truth behind the said act.
It was found on July 1 that the eyeglasses of the statue had been removed and placed atop the head of the statue. A T-shirt was also present over the head of the statue. People had in general expressed indignation at this development. It was thought that some miscreants were behind the act.
The CCTV footage revealed that a person who arrived near Gandhikatte placed his footwear outside the premises where Gandhikatte is located, placed a cloth over the head of the statue, and sat near the platform for about ten minutes. Further enquiries revealed that the man concerned is mentally ill and he is seen roaming around this region often, the police said.
