Mangaluru, Jun 26: Due to Covid lockdown, Mangalore University, which had announced a time table for the degree exams, could not hold them.
At the same time, deemed to be universities have conducted online tests and published the results. In a number of such institutions, admission process for the postgraduate courses has begun. As a result, many students of colleges under the university lament the fact that they are not able to join the courses of their choice in specific institutions.
There are 153 affiliated and 36 government colleges under Mangalore University. These colleges could not hold degree classes. Five deemed degree colleges are functioning. There are some institutions which issue post-graduation degree. As the deemed universities conducted exams, their students have a better prospects of joining the courses of their choice.
A parent said that he wanted to admit his son for the MSc course being run by a private institution at Manipal. However, he said he has not been able to admit his son for the MSc course where admission has begun. He urged Mangalore University to find some solution to this problem.
Mangalore University falls under the ministry for higher education. As such, it cannot conduct any activity including examination without the instructions of the government. Therefore, degree exams could not be held because of lockdown, said registrar (examinations), Dr P L Dharma.
He says that only five deemed colleges function here. They have the facilities and good infrastructure. They therefore conducted exams and held exams online. We cannot do anything without government permission," he reveals.
Prof P N Yadapadithaya, vice chancellor of the university, has called a meeting of university principals on June 29 to discuss the matter of holding exams to degree students. Prof P N Yadapadithaya, stated that the university is likely to hold classes before July 15 after vaccinating the children. Prof Dharma said that the priority of the university is to hold exams by completing the final semester.
